[i] About the Story of "Zettai Karen Children"
Because this song is the opening theme of a SF anime, learning its story probably helps you to understand the lyric. The heroines are three naughty 10 yr. girls with ESP power.
In the story live many espers. Some normal people think them as mere powerful tools, some think them as dangerous and to be banished, and some espers attack such people to liberate themselves. There are also those who wish peaceful co-existence.
The three girls are the highest rank espers (only three in Japan). Because of their power, they are forced to confront esper criminals as government agents. The agency set the ornament-shaped ESP limiters on them that weaken their ESP power, and the limiters are released in their operation. Because there are some reasons to consider, they don't kill even the atrocious criminals. They grow mentally with their 20 yr. supervisor (as of 2013, they are 14 yr. in the story of the original manga).
The most important point: The esper prophet told that the three shall become the leaders of the espers in their twenty and shall fight the final war against the normal people (this prophecy has been known to the agency from the beginning and is revealed to the three afterward). In the story, the more fundamental the prophesied matter is, the more difficult it is to change. I guess "change the world" and "get over the future" in the lyric refer to the hard try to avoid this catastrophe.
In my interpretation, "we" of this lyric refers to the heroines, and "I" & "you" refer to one of them. The original lyric has only four occurrences of personal pronouns ("anata", "MY", "watashi" and "WE"), so most of "I" may be "we". If there is anyone that the three think as their comrade, he/she is included in "we" (hence "you").
[ii] About BABYMETAL and "Over The Future"
On Legend "D" concert (this version is called "-Rising Force ver.-"), the first verse & chorus were sung by YUIMETAL & MOAMETAL, the second verse by SU-METAL, the second chorus & further by all three members.
This song is Miss Suzuka's starting point as professional singer. Karen Girl's was formed to sing this song, consisting Ayami MUTO, Yuika SHIMA & Suzuka NAKAMOTO (10-12 yr. in 2008). Miss Yui said she had adored Karen Girl's and was glad to meet Miss Ayami & Miss Suzuka when she joined Sakura Gakuin (rumor say the reason why Miss Yuika didn't join it was the distance between Tokyo and her hometown). Miss Yui likes this song very much. She & Miss Moa danced "Over The Future" as their audition for Sakura Gakuin [video].

Notes
- It means her ESP power is filling up. This "kiteru" means getting closer to a certain point, or something being about to happen, or simply having momentum.
- "可憐" (karen) is used for the cute things or persons that people feel like protecting.
- Since the ESP limiter is ornament-shaped and visible from outside, this limiter probably refers to "your" hesitation.
- It may be "we can change the world" rather than an imperative.
- "Riaru" (= real) probably means "(we are) the real stuff" or "our real selves". "Tsuranuire" (= tsuranuku) means penetrating some object or carrying some attitude through to the end.
- The original line is "Suriru ga saikoo." but YUIMETAL & MOAMETAL sang "Ashita e saa ikoo!". Maybe someone had thought the original a little sensational.
- Grammatically, "After we feel..." and "If/When we feel..." are possible, but I choose "Now that..." because the next line contains "ima" (= now; let's get over the future now).
- Grammatially "Or rather, I'm starting to realize 'what wait for us...'".
- Literally "in this hand".
- Anyway, it means that "we" believe "we" have enough power to try to change the future world.

ReplyDeleteAs Maggie-sensei and I (in note 1) pointed out, its original meaning is "coming (to a certain point)", and I think this fits the best for this line. Meaning "popular" is a special case of "having momentum" and (only) used when watching TV, browsing a magazine, etc.
DeleteIt's important to note that the kiteru in the official lyrics is in katakana though. If it were the original meaning, it would be more likely to be in hiragana, but I'm not a native speaker so you're probably a better judge.
ReplyDeleteIt is written in katakana because it means not movement but filling up (of the ESP power). Of cource, there is a possibility it means popularity, but, if the audience in the concert say "kiteru", it probably means "her singing is powerful", "she is in top condition", etc. It means popularity only when there can be found no other things coming (more than popularity).

What was spoken in the kamishibai just BEFORE, Over the Future was performed? I heard "Sekando Impakto" and many things on "sekai no idoru", and even "saida" from OTF?

ReplyDeletelistening today to this song with your romaji transcription, I found two possible mistakes (it may be my ears though!):
1) in the line "Itami mo tanoshimeru" I hear "tanoshimeku" (with a K, or maybe a strong G, but not an R) very clearly.
2) The second time the line "Dare ni mo nite-nai egao..." appears (i.e. when Su-Metal sings it), i hear clearly "Date ni mo..." with a T not an R.
Strangely, the first time (when Y&M sing it) it's "Dare" (I think it's 'dare' too in the subtitles that I have for the series, but in the opening of the series the song is heavily edited and the second 'dare' is absent). I wonder if this date x dare changes the meaning of the line (supposing it's not my ears deceiving me, that is).

They may sound different from "R" maybe because of audio processing or mic positioning or some other reason, but there is no Japanese word "tanoshimeku" and "date ni mo" means "just for show/fun" ("date" means a dandy) which is not fit here.
DeleteI'm sorry for forgetting the suffix "-meku". The verb "tanoshi-meku" could possibly mean something like "(the pain) becomes looking like joyful". Anyway, I think there is no need to diverge from the official lyric to non-authentic Japanese though they sound different from "R".
