Tsubasa o Kudasai

Released on 2013 Nov. 20th, included in the BD "LIVE - LEGEND I, D, Z, APOCALYPSE -",
recorded on 2012 Dec. 20th at Legend "D" concert (performed only once then).
Lyric: YAMAGAMI Michio / Music: Kunihiko MURAI

The original was sung by Akai Tori in 1971.

Tsubasa o Kudasai (Please Give Me Wings)

Now, if the wish I make
comes true, then I want a pair of wings.
On my back, like a bird,
attach the white wings, please.

Into this vast sky, spreading my wings,
I want to fly away.
Into the sorrowless and free sky,
flapping my wings, I want to go away.

--------
Now, not wealth or honor
do I want, but a pair of wings.
In my childhood, I was dreaming of it.
Now still the same, I'm dreaming of it.

Into this vast sky, spreading my wings,
I want to fly away.
Into the sorrowless and free sky,
flapping my wings...
--------

Into this vast sky, spreading my wings,
I want to fly away.
Into the sorrowless and free sky,
flapping my wings... { I want to go away.
  / (repeat & fade out) }

ROMAJI LYRIC AND NOTES ARE BELOW.

[i] This Song is Very Popular in Japan.

The original "翼をください" was sung by a folk band "赤い鳥" (Akai Tori; The Red Birds), released in 1971 as coupling tune. Many singers have covered it since 1973. In mid 1970's it was adopted by a music textbook (now by most textbooks), and most pupils and students have sung it in their music lessons, so this song is very popular in Japan and most Japanese under 50 can sing this song.

The lyric writer suffered so heavily from asthma that he couldn't go to school in his adolescence. Rumor says he wrote this lyric by recalling the sky he then saw through the window of the hospital.

Notes

  1. The lines marked with "S" are sung by SU-METAL alone, with "MY" by MOAMETAL & YUIMETAL. The lines without marks are sung by all three members. (Added on 2017 Mar. 20.)
  2. BABYMETAL's version is called "-Honoo ver.-" (flame ver),and the second verse & chorus (between two --------) are omitted, and "yukitai" is added instead of repeat & fade out.
  3. These two lines have often been omitted by Akai Tori and other singers.
  4. Literally "Now still the same, I am dreaming of what I dreamed of in my childhood".

  1. Hello Du-Enki san,

there's an important (I think) detail about the history of covers of the song that you forgot to tell: in the movie "Rebuild of Evangelion 2" aka "Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance" (2009) a version of "Tsubasa wo kudasai" appears, sung by Megumi Hayashibara and what seems a children chorus in a very important scene. Persoanlly I dislike that version because it has parts that are seriously out of tune and torture my ears heavily in an unpleasant way, and I would stick to any of Akai Tori's versions instead, but fact is some people like it very much (the Evangelion version) and possibly the one who decided to use the tune in this "Legend" chose it because of the Evangelion connection - it makes sense considering that the intros and outros of Legend D are full of Secondo and Sarudo Impactos and other Evangelion references :) I'm happy that BM's version isn't out of tune at all though!! :D

    Saludos,

    Fernando :)

    1. Thank you for information.
(I learned today) many lines of the narrations of Legend "D" (& "Z") are borrowed from the ending scene of the movie where this tune is played, so there is the connection.

    2. I'm glad if for once I've contributed with a bit of help. I sometimes have the feeling I only bring doubts and headaches! :D Anyway, after reading your reply, I've checked the final part of the film again, which was a painful exercise because of the (intentional? it seems so, coming from a professional singer) insistent out-of-tune vocals, oh my!, and yes, via English subtitles I've seen some of the lines you may be referring to. The birth/death/rebirth as something non-human, and in the translation there was something about trascending Logos, I wonder what Japanese words were translated with that, but I remember you mentioned that "Logos" was implied in the "law of nature" in some of your notes to these prologues. On the other hand, I guess the movie was still somewhat "fresh" (being from 2009) when these concerts were made, in 2012-2013.

    3. Du Enki san,

after your comment last June, 21st, I thought you were going to make some changes in the notes of this post, about the lines in the movie you mentioned and such. Not that you have to do it, of course ;) On the other hand, one thing I keep forgetting to mention here is that I believe that in one or two of these early video-concerts (I don't remember which one/s) there is some possible allusion to another movie, Mamoru Oshii's "Tenshi no tamago" (1985). I mean, when in the images of BMs videos some eggs with wings appear, supposed to bring the angels of dance and love (Yui and Moa), maybe Su-metal too, I don't remember. The eggs shown are very similar to the ones in Oshii's movie if memory serves. I should check it though, it's been some years since I last saw the movie...

      Saludos,

      Fernando :)

    4. I'm sorry for very late reply.
I revised the notes on Prologues for Akatsuki and Prologue for SU-METAL's Birthday Celebration.

YUIMETAL's & MOAMETAL's are with wings and SU-METAL's is without wings. I've not yet seen Oshii's egg with wings, but, rather than an egg, those of BABYMETAL seem to me like a silhouette of a baby wrapped in cloth like a cocoon.

    5. Dear Du Enki san,

late reply indeed! I was thinking you were tired of me :D Because for a couple of months I did so many and insisting questions that you gently answered! But there were times I thought I was testing your patience :( Sorry for that.

I'll have to check the changes then (in the Prologues).
About the possible relation with Oshii's movie, it was an impression based on blurred memory, so easily I could be totally wrong. I should watch the movie again and then the prologues. Yes, the babys wrapped in cloth, but the form of the objects or something in them reminded me of the eggs from the movie. I have to check that, definitely.

Now that I'm here, I'm sure you will have seen this mysterious announcement in the official BM web about a new prophecy by the Kitsune-sama... Any idea what's that about? New album? (I doubt that, no new songs in almost two years..., very different from what happened after the first album and the MR release...) New DVD? Something to do with the coming of age of our fave little ladies? I'm intrigued...

      Regards,

      Fernando :)

    6. There were several things that took me time & energy. One of them is the interpretation of the lines in the movie Evangelion 2.0.

I guess the announcement is about THE ONE members' limited event to be held in December(?), but only the Fox God knows.
